🪶📜 | "For someone who loved words as much as I did, it was amazing how often they failed me."

love it.. it's one of my favourite of all time
I read this book with my friend Mari and we were both really exited for it when we read the synopsis of it. Here comes the “but” tho. The book had a huge amount of potential in my opinion. The idea itself was good, but it did fail in execution. I normally give my books 50-100 pages before I dnf. If I had read this book alone, I would have, because the first 100 pages were boring. The book is separated into acts. And the whole first act/100 pages, nothing happens. At all. In the second act the murder happens and it feels like you keep saying WTF, only to have act 3 and 4 be boring again. Act 5 picks it back up and especially scene 7 and the epilogue (that last sentence!), are pretty good, amazing even. But sadly it fades compared to how much nothingness is in this book. The author tried to give the found family trope, but failed at it. Because even tho these characters only seem to have each other, we never really get to know them. Even the protagonist is super vague in his characteristics. We get how close they are, for how they interact within the group, meaning gestures and the way they communicate on general, but that is it. Every time the author build some tension between them and you think you might finally get somewhere or answers, she shies away from it. She cuts, starts a new scene and never talks about it again. No clue why. The whole Shakespeare aspect was also on the VERY heavy side. I get that they are aspiring actors/“theater kids”, but it seems as tho that is it. That that makes the most of who they are and what they will ever be. It started to feel, like they couldn’t exist outside of it, like nothing else was ever important. Overall it wasn’t the worst book I ever read, but it could have been so much better. Especially if a lot of the unnecessary parts were cut out, that seemed to just be there to fill pages.
The ending??? The way oliver does not know but he gets to find out and we don’t??? Rude!!!
3.75 sterne
4.5 stars This got me back into reading! Couldn’t get myself to finish a book for months, but this captivated me, finished it in 3 days. I think it would definitely help knowing more about Shakespeare than I do to understand all of it, but I still loved it.
