REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS I have not read any other books by Avon Gale or Roan Parrish yet, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about their books, especially about the books by Roan Parrish. So when I was asked if I wanted to join a bookstagram tour to celebrate the release of Heart of the Steal, their newest LGBQT+ romance novel, I was head over heels and really excited to participate. I received an earc of the book from the publishers in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much for that. But I also bought the paperback version of the book immediately since I don’t like ebooks that much and I thought the cover was cute and looked pretty with all the pink and the two guys on the front page. So yes, as you can see, I was very excited to read this book, now that I have finished it, it pains me a little to say that I didn’t like it quite as much as I hoped I would. Why you ask? Well then, check out my review down below. I haven’t read the synopsis before I started reading the book; all I knew was that the book is about an FBI agent (which got me all excited) and an art thief and that both kind of fall for each other so yes, it’s a romance novel and yes, since people already told me so many (good) things about both authors I expected it to be a very sexy read and I was prepared for some sex scenes but I didn’t expect it to be THAT sexy. It’s not that I mind sex scenes in books though, if they are well written, I love them, really, but the book basically starts off with two strangers, two men, who randomly meet at some big event and one of them gives the other one a blow job like RIGHT AWAY. WHAT? They only exchanged a couple of glances, said a few words and then all of a sudden they were kissing and one is giving the other one a blow job in public. I didn’t expect that to be honest and I didn’t like it because two people who are certainly interested in each other can also be interested in each other without hooking up right after they’ve met. I usually don’t read these kinds of books to be honest; I’ve only read a few so far so I don’t know a lot about this genre, maybe it’s just normal to add so many sex scenes to the story, I don’t know, but I definitely expected more romance and less sex for sure. Sadly it took me a while to get into the story. It wasn’t that I didn’t like the writing, that wasn’t the case at all because I adored their writing but unfortunately the story wasn’t very interesting. Not much happened. I do understand that the story was – of course – supposed to be focused on the relationship between our main characters, Amory and William, but nothing really happened, nothing much except them having desk sex and picnic blanket sex and giving each other blowjobs all over the place. I didn’t feel a romantic connection between them; there was no chemistry, nothing, just two people who enjoyed having sex with each other. I just don’t see why two people who are obviously in love want to spend all of their free time in bed together. I would have loved to accompany them on a trip or a tour, on fun adventures, would have loved to learn more about both their jobs, their lives before they’ve met; their families and friends. Everything seemed so blunt and somewhat superficial. While I really liked William, the FBI agent, I couldn’t connect to Amory at all. He’s described as a forty something very successful man with long grey hair and a lean body and although his way of speaking, behaving and for sure his looks reminded me of someone’s grandfather I just didn’t think he was very interesting. I also hated how manipulative he was. I would have dumped him the second I found out he manipulates others with his money and popularity. When he was around William, he was a nice guy though, he developed for sure; he changed, thanks to William and I thought it was the cutest thing ever when he adopted the alley cat but apart from all that I didn’t like him much, especially in the beginning, and I couldn’t connect to him at all. He was too stiff and pretentious. William on the other hand I liked immediately. I do have a thing for crime scenes, for all things FBI, police etc. pp. I just love me a fun and interesting investigation and I loved the fact that William, who’s a badass FBI agent working at the crime art department, falls for a guy who’s basically an art thief. I really liked William, he’s a great character and someone I’d totally fall for myself. He’s strong and protective, he believes in himself in his job, he believes in rules and he just seems so down-to-earth, decent and just like a really good guy. Yeah he might needs to work on some things as well, since he’s also got some issues, but I liked him nevertheless and the further I got the more I started to like their relationship too. They both finally admitted how much they like each other; that they have deep feelings for each other and I loved how the story, in the end, became so completely relationship-focused. Not to mention the kitty and the way both of them behaved when it came around – my heart, not gonna lie though, this almost killed me. This was the absolute cutest thing and all I wanted them to do was spend all day with the cute little kitten. Heart of the Steal is a light and fluffy read, I only needed two days to finish it. I expected more action to be honest, more badass FBI agents, I expected it to be a little dangerous even, maybe some gun fights as well. I for sure expected it to be a bit more like the Thomas Crown Affair but sadly it wasn’t. It has a lot of fluffy moments and A LOT of sexy scenes, especially. Call me naïve but I actually expected more romance to be honest; more relationship drama and definitely less sexy times. All in all I enjoyed the book; I adored Audrey (the kitten), loved William and later on even liked Amory but the book was definitely nothing like I expected it to be. I loved how opposite the two main characters were, that made their whole adventure even more exciting. The writing was great, amazing even I would say. I loved the characters little disputes, I loved how Amory thought William was cute when he was being “moral” and I loved how William kind of looked up to Amory but also always teased him concerning his money and his popularity. I really liked their relationship in the end; I just thought the story was kind of boring since nothing much happened, at least nothing but the two of them connecting and spending some sexy times together. I think if you don’t expect too much from the book and if you’re just looking for a fluffy, nice read, then you’re definitely in for a treat. If you like some burning hot scenes, then you should definitely pick up the book but if you’re looking for a deep, interesting, action packed FBI-hunts-down-an-art-thief story combined with some romance I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this one to you.
