Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets Clueless in this boy-meets-boy spin on Grease

"Only Mostly Devastated is the kind of book I wish existed when my kids were younger - a charming, funny, laugh-out-loud teen romance that reminds all readers love comes in a multitude of flavors, and they are ALL sweet." - Jodi Picoult, NYT bestselling author of Small Great Things and A Spark of Light

Will Tavares is the dream summer fling―he's fun, affectionate, kind―but just when Ollie thinks he's found his Happily Ever After, summer vacation ends and Will stops texting Ollie back. Now Ollie is one prince short of his fairytale ending, and to complicate the fairytale further, a family emergency sees Ollie uprooted and enrolled at a new school across the country. Which he minds a little less when he realizes it's the same school Will goes to...except Ollie finds that the sweet, comfortably queer guy he knew from summer isn't the same one attending Collinswood High. This Will is a class clown, closeted―and, to be honest, a bit of a jerk.

Ollie has no intention of pining after a guy who clearly isn't ready for a relationship, especially since this new, bro-y jock version of Will seems to go from hot to cold every other week. But then Will starts "coincidentally" popping up in every area of Ollie's life, from music class to the lunch table, and Ollie finds his resolve weakening.
The last time he gave Will his heart, Will handed it back to him trampled and battered. Ollie would have to be an idiot to trust him with it again.

Right? Right.

Finally finished this … it felt like it took me forever to read this book but looking back it was actually only 3 days. Had some issues getting into this book because I felt like not much was happening, but when I was about half way through the book I got really hooked by the story. I loved the characters, even though there were definitely many ;) I also had a very exact imagination of Will, I can’t even really explain why but the description of his light brown skin and freckles just created the most attractive man in my head lmao. I did really like this book but I think it could have been a bit longer because the ending was very random and abrupt. ,,Maybe happily ever after weren’t a singular event. Maybe they were something you had to work at , and build, and never give up on, as long as they were something you still wanted.“ TW: homophobia , grief 4,25 ⭐️

3,5/5 stars it is. Even if it has kind of a typical plot, it was written well and I liked how some things turned out in the end. Sure, most of it was predictable most of the time, but it was done in a good way. I also liked that it wasn't that huge of a hate-thing in the end, when Will came out to his parents/friends as he expected - they all kind of got along with it and it wasn't done in a "forced happy ending" way, but more naturally. Definitely a book you can read when you like that kind of storys.

[The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.] What I liked: • Ollie is such a cute and relatable character! • wlw/mlm solidarity! • amazing PCOS representation! • so many queer characters! • adorable love story <3 • talks about serious topics as well What I didn't like: • I wish it was longer! I just can't get enough of this story!

A lot of teenage angst but cute nevertheless.
