Giuseppe Enrico Carpani, Ionathas

Prolifico poeta e drammaturgo in lingua latina, nonché professore di grammatica, logica e retorica al Collegio Romano, Giuseppe Enrico Carpani (1683-1762) è probabilmente il maggiore esponente della tragedia gesuitica romana nella prima metà del Settecento; egli rappresenta inoltre una figura di non ultima importanza per quanto riguarda i rapporti tra la Compagnia di Gesù e l’Accademia dell’Arcadia, un tema ancora dibattuto e per larga parte insoluto. Si presenta qui l’edizione critica, accompagnata da uno studio introduttivo, da una traduzione italiana e da un commento, della tragedia Ionathas (1750), la cui chiave interpretativa è da ricondursi al tema del legame tra etica e libero arbitrio, presupposto fondante del sistema morale dei discepoli di Ignazio.****************Giuseppe Enrico Carpani (1683–1762) was a prolific Jesuit poet and playwright in Latin, and a professor of grammar, logic and rhetoric at the Collegio Romano. He is probably the main representative of Roman Jesuit drama in the first half of the 18th century and a key figure in the broader context of the relationship between the Jesuit Order and the Accademia dell’Arcadia, a theme which is still hotly debated in literary studies. This volume presents a critical edition of the tragedy Ionathas (1750), whose interpretative key lies in the theme of the bond of ethics and free will, a fundamental assumption of the moral system of Jesuits. This edition of the text is accompanied by an introductory study, an Italian translation and a commentary.
