Girl Online: The first novel by Zoella

I had n number of problems with this book. 1) She writes blogs and she is very famous, yet her blogs aren't inspiring or doesn't have good content. In real world people will just ignore it. 2) We live in a very internet life, she didn't try facebook, twitter or instagram him at all? It's just when Ollie told her about him? First instint of a person is to always check instagram. (Well in my world it is) 3) Grammar, the fuck is wring with the writer? 4) The book was the worst guide to teenage life. 5) Characters were so eh, I mean one moment she is clumsy another moment she is so mature and taking care of a baby girl and making life decisions and crap. 6) The story wasn't captivating at all. 7) I didn't understand when they scene changed, when it was day or night or god knows what. It was just so freaking confusing. 8) It was just so easy for me to skip a lot of parts in the middle and yet get away with it. I didn't particularly hated it but it I could find a lot of problems, maybe I have grown way to old for such stories now.

Okay, first of all: I don't understand all the 'hate' about it. I don't care if Zoe wrote it or not - I really enjoyed reading it! Personally, I like to read some 'light' books like this after I finished a trilogy or something. Just a book that hasn't a million characters and a long and complicated story. Also, it's exam season so I want something easy to read. And I think Girl Online was perfect for this situation! The characters were loveable and although I cringed at Pennys clumsiness I just could't help but to love her. Noah was also pretty cute. (But no one is better than Elliot :p) This book made me feel all warm and fuzzy and I'm really looking forward to the sequel!

Before picking up this one, i didn't expect it to turn out so well! I've heard and read all these bad critics about Zoe being a Youtuber and creating a FF about herself (which she certainly did not) and ghostwriting this novel. But I disagree with the critics, because I enjoyed this book and read it in three sittings. It's nothing original, but it sure is an exciting and fun and lovly story and I wouldn't have thought I'd actually look forward for reading the second book!

Girl Online - Zoe Sugg zum Inhalt: Penny hat das Gefühl, dass sie im echten Leben oft nicht wirklich offen über ihre Probleme und Gedanken sprechen kann. Deshalb hat sie angefangen unter dem Namen Girl Online über ihr Leben zu bloggen. Dort kann sie frei über alles schreiben, was sie beschäftigt. Von peinlichen Erlebnissen, über Probleme mit ihrer früheren besten Freundin, bis zu den Panikattacken, die sie seit einem Autounfall immer wieder hat. Doch nach einem Zwischenfall ist Penny erst einmal froh vom Internet weg zu kommen und da trifft es sich perfekt, dass sie über Weihnachten mit ihrer Familie nach New York fliegt. Als Penny sich dort allerdings verliebt, muss sie das natürlich auf ihrem Blog festhalten, ohne zu wissen in was für ein Drama sie damit hineingezogen wird... meine Meinung: Schon bevor ich überhaupt mit dem Lesen angefangen habe, habe ich schon ziemlich viel über "Girl Online" gehört. Zuerst weil das Buch anscheinend in der ersten Woche bereits einen Verkaufsrekord aufgestellt hat und danach weil herausgekommen ist, dass Zoe Sugg das Buch nicht selbst, oder zumindest nicht allein, geschrieben hat. Ehrlich gesagt finde ich beides nicht besonders überraschend. Ersteres weil Zoes Youtube Kanal mehrere Millionen Abonnenten hat (ich zähle übrigens auch dazu, obschon ich ihre Videos nicht regelmässig schaue) und letzteres weil Zoe nun mal keine Autorin ist und ich denke das die meisten "berühmten" Leute die Bücher schreiben dies nicht ohne fremde Hilfe tun. Damit ist eigentlich für mich auch alles zu diesem Thema gesagt. Meine Rezension wird sich einzig mit "Girl Online" und der Geschichte die dahinter steckt befassen. Wenn ich dieses Buch in einem Wort zusammenfassen müsste, wäre dieses Wort eindeutig "süss". Die Geschichte behandelt Themen wie Familie, Freundschaft und natürlich die erste Liebe. Teilweise kommen auch etwas ernstere Themen vor, wie beispielsweise Pennys Panikattacken, an denen sie seit einem Autounfall leidet. Insgesamt hat die Geschichte aber eine ziemlich leichte Atmosphäre und hat wirklich gute Laune gemacht. Auch der Schreibstil war sehr locker und umgangssprachlich, weshalb ich das Buch auch relativ schnell durch gelesen hatte. Erzählt wird die Geschichte von Penny, die soweit ich mich erinnern kann etwa 16 Jahre alt ist. Schon auf den ersten paar Seiten merkt man, dass sie ziemlich ungeschickt ist und peinliche Situationen praktisch anzuziehen scheint. Sie hat ziemlich viel mit typischen Teenager Problemen zu kämpfen und ihre Ehrlichkeit mit der sie darüber auf ihrem Blog berichtet, hat sie echt sympathisch gemacht. Jedoch hat sie teilweise auch einfach extrem jung auf gewirkt und ich konnte mich nicht wirklich mit ihr und ihren Problemen identifizieren. Ich kann mir aber gut vorstellen, dass dies für etwas jüngere Leserinnen anders sein könnte und sie sich selbst und ihre Probleme in Penny und ihrem Leben wiederfinden. Daher fand ich es auch wirklich gut, dass Penny im Verlauf der Geschichte eine Entwicklung durchmacht und selbstbewusster und unabhängiger wird. Ich denke die Geschichte hat eine gute Botschaft für jüngere Leserinnen. Ich fand es schön, dass auch ein Thema wie Panikattacken behandelt wurde, wozu ich bisher eigentlich kaum etwas gelesen habe. Die Umsetzung fand ich allerdings nicht sehr gelungen, da mich die ernsteren Teile der Geschichte einfach nicht wirklich berühren konnten. Vielleicht lag das aber teilweise auch daran, dass ich mich nicht mit Penny identifizieren konnte. Besser gefallen hat mir hingegen das Thema Familie, welches in Pennys Leben eine ziemlich wichtige Rolle spielt. Pennys Familie fand ich wirklich super sympathisch. Ich fand es toll, dass sie sich mit ihrem älteren Bruder so gut verstanden hat und ich fand es auch echt toll, wie herzlich ihr Vater und ihre Mutter sind und wie sehr sie Penny unterstützen. Auch das Thema Freundschaft hat mir gut gefallen. Penny hat einen total sympathischen allerbesten Freund und die Freundschaft der beiden war wirklich total süss. Sie sind Nachbarn und haben sogar geheime Klopfzeichen. Leider gab es im Verlauf der Geschichte ziemlich Drama zwischen den beiden, was ich etwas schade fand, besonders weil sich Penny und Elliot dabei beide etwas nervig verhalten haben und dieses Drama echt nicht nötig gewesen wäre. Dann wäre da natürlich auch noch die Liebesgeschichte, die eine wichtige Rolle in der Geschichte spielt. Die Geschichte war allgemein ziemlich vorhersehbar, aber am "schlimmsten" war es bei der Liebesgeschichte. Diese entwickelt sich ziemlich schnell, was mich allerdings nicht gestört hat, da Penny und Noah einfach super süss zusammen sind und wirklich auch einige Dinge haben, die sie verbinden und man somit ihre Liebe als Leser auch etwas nachvollziehen kann. Was ich allerdings etwas schade fand war, dass es für den Leser super offensichtlich ist, dass Noah etwas verbirgt und man sich auch ziemlich gut denken kann was, aber Penny einfach nichts zu merken scheint. Ihr fällt zwar schon auf, dass sich Noah teilweise merkwürdig verhält, aber sie denkt sich dann einfach nichts weiter dabei, teilweise habe ich echt etwas an ihrer Intelligenz gezweifelt. Aber natürlich musste es ja einen Konflikt geben, dessen Auflösen allerdings auch ziemlich offensichtlich war. Als letztes noch kurz zu der tollen Gestaltung des Buches. Ich finde das Cover echt total schön, mir gefallen die Farben super und ich finde es passt auch sehr gut zur Atmosphäre der Geschichte. Die kleinen Bildchen passen zudem wirklich gut zu dem was in der Geschichte passiert und erinnern mich auch an gewisse Szenen. Der Titel passt natürlich auch sehr gut, da "Girl Online" ja der Name ist unter dem Penny bloggt, obschon das Bloggen eine kleinere Rolle gespielt hat, als ich erwartet hätte. Fazit: Süss, unterhaltsam aber nichts Besonderes, so würde ich Girl Online zusammenfassen. Die Handlung war für meinen Geschmack etwas zu vorhersehbar und ich konnte mich leider nicht wirklich mit der Protagonistin und ihren Problemen identifizieren. Für jüngere Leserinnen so um die 13 Jahre, was wohl die Zielgruppe wäre, dürfte dies allerdings weniger ein Problem sein, da das Buch viele typische Teenager Probleme behandelt und ihnen sicher auch die Liebesgeschichte gut gefallen wird. 3,5/5*

Eine tolle Liebesgeschichte. Fühlte mich als wäre ich in New York mit dabei. Lesen wenn man eine Auszeit aus dem Alltag braucht.

Ok. Dieses Buch hat 5 Monate gebraucht um von mir gelesen zu werden. Ich mag Zoella als Youtuberin, aber dieses Buch war einfach zu langatmig. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass ich es auf Englisch gelesen habe und mich generell erst rein lesen muss, aber ... ach ich weiß auch nicht. Es war nett und am Ende auch leicht überraschend. Mehr auch nicht, leider.

Ich bin mir echt unsicher weil Penny mir so auf die Nerven ging, die Story teilweise viel zu süß & zuckrig war & der Schreibstil nur okay war , aber ich gerade die letzten 50 Seiten echt gut fand? Also das Ganze wurde gut gelöst & Penny hat wirklich eine Entwixklung durchgemacht ? Davon abgesehen mag ich sie immer noch nickt wirklich

Im Buch geht es um Penny. Penny schreibt einen anonymen Blog, den sie Girl Online getauft hat. Sie hat seit kurzem mit sogenannten Panikattacken und Angstzuständen zu kämpfen. Sie schreibt darüber auf ihrem Blog und wird zunehmend bekannter. In ihrem Reallife sieht das ganz anders aus. Penny ist an ihrer Schule eher eine Randperson und niemand beschäftigt sich wirklich darum wie es ihr geht oder was sie so macht. Sie hat einen besten Freund, Elliot, mit dem sie Wand an Wand lebt. Als ihre Eltern sie und Elliot mit zu einem geschäftlichen Termin nach New York nehmen, ahnt sie nicht, dass dieser Trip einiges in ihrem Leben ändern wird. Dafür dass das Buch Zoe’s erster Roman ist, ist der Schreibstil wirklich genial. Man kann eintauchen und flüssig lesen. Besonders beeindruckt hat mich die eindeutige Beschreibung von Panik und Angst. Ich weiß das Zoella selber damit zu kämpfen hat, weswegen es sehr klar und vorstellbar beschrieben ist. Man kann wenigstens etwas nachempfinden, wie es sich anfühlen muss so etwas zu haben. Die Geschichte hat mich voll und ganz überzeugt. Klar ist es immernoch eine Liebesgeschichte und vermutlich gibt es auf der Welt viele nach diesem Schema aber trotzdem ist ja auch jede Liebesgeschichte in sich selbst besonders. Hier ist plötzlich ein klarer Wendepunkt, mit dem man so an dieser Stelle nicht rechnet. Ich bin begeistert von den Personen und dem ganzen Buch und werde es jedem weiterempfehlen, der englisch versteht und mich nach einem Buch fragt.

Before I start with the review of the book I just want to let you know that I've never heard of Zoe Sugg until I hold her book in my hands. Neither have I ever seen one of her videos - until now. I applied for Girl Online at Blogg dein Buch because I thought that the cover was pretty amazing. First of all, after my application I wanted to switch to another book because I really was in the mood for some christmassy story but than I made up my mind and stayed with Girl Online. I just couldn't get this really beautiful cover out of my head. After all it was a kind of a christmas story, what actually made this book even more special and likable. Just one more look at the cover: I love it. I really do. I love all the tiny photos they chose for the cover, it just looks so pretty. The colors also go perfectly together, they are nice and simple. Blue and Pink - I mean this book is made for a girl. I am absolutely thrilled. What I also love about the book is that there is no actual book cover, the cover is literally printed right on the cardboard. Sometimes I just like this much better - as in this case. I totally love the design. It's perfect. As I already said, I haven't heard of Zoe Sugg before. But now, after I finished the book, I watched a couple of her videos but to be honest, i didn't quite like them. Zoe seems to be a little exaggerated and everything. But anyway - this review isn't about her or her videos or even her personality, it's just about her book. This huge hype about this book has totally gone past me. I mean, they say that it's one of the best selling book debuts ever, right? Also Zoe seems to be kind of famous - around the whole world. I can't believe that I haven't heard of her videos until now. But anyhow - maybe that isn't too bad; so I was able to enjoy the book without any prejudices. The fact that blogging is a major role in the book really appealed to me. After all I have als been blogging for a couple of years now - not quite as successful as Zoe, but it's still fun to me. I also liked the fact that the book was talking about panic attacks and fears. Every now and then I find myself in exactly such an situation, so reading a book with a character who has such issus was really interesting to me and it made me really curious. I didn't know that Zoe herself suffers from anxiety disorder, so it was nice discovering that she put a lot of private things into her book. To me the book sounded great; to me it sounded like a book I would definitely like - not only because of the whole blogging-subject or the panic attacks, also because a cute little love story is part of the book as well and the fact, that most of the story takes place in New York around christmas time made it even more perfect. At first the main focus of the story is on Penny herself, her panic attacks and the fact that she does not particularly likes herself and seeks for affection in her online world. She always feels like she has to pretend to be someone else because in her opinion she's not really likable or lovable enough. That's the main reason why she actually hosts her blog called "Girl Online", where she can write about her true feelings, fears and anything else thats part of her life and whatever is important to her, like friends, love, her passion for photography or her family, without anyone knowing its her. After only a short amount of time she's already got a lot of followers on her blog, thanks to her honesty and passion with which she runs her blog. Penny is a very clumsy person. All the time she hits herself, falls down, slips or whatever - so many emberassing things happen to her, it's unbelievable. She really kind of reminds me of myself - in many ways actually. There is this one scene (everyone who already read the book should know what scene I am talking about) when something extremly emberassing happens to her and one time, a couple of years ago when I was still in secondary school, something similar happened to me. It was in a break between periods and I was running over the schoolyard (I was in a hurry) and for whatever reason (I still don't really know why and how it happend) I fell on my stomach right in front of the whole school. I ripped of my pants and kind of destroyed my jacket. It was sooo emberassing, you would not believe it. I spent the rest of the day in the school nursery and had my Dad pick me up. That totally made me like Penny so much, because I totally feel her and I can identify with her so well in so many ways. She has a passion for photography, which I also have, she has a male best friend, like me, she is a blogger (as you can see, I am too) and she actually hasn't got that many friends - which is the same with me. Elliot, her best friend, is the only person on earth who knows about her secret blog and he supports her as much as he can. Elliot is a really great book character. In the first chapter the readers are told that Elliot is gay. I thought the whole "Elliot-is-gay-thing" was really refreshing, because in the book the fact that he is gay, isn't so special. It's just as it is - it's totally normal and naturally. Elliot is very emotional, he loves fashion, he loves to dress up and he is a really loving and caring person. He's got a very soft and feminine side but that's what makes him super likable. You just have to love him. Also Penny's family plays a very important role. There is her brother Tom. They totally trust each other, tell each other everything and even though Tom is going to college and doesn't spend that much time at home anymore they are really comfortable with each other - they are like best friends. Penny's mother is a little crazy. She and Penny's father run a wedding planning company and sometimes her mother tries all kind of different dresses on and runs around the house with them on for like the whole day. The two of them kind of seem like they are a little "off track" but in a lovely way. It was so adorable sometimes. Because of her parents job they get an invitation to New York because some New York couple wants them to plan their wedding. As soon as she gets there she meets this incredible interesting and good looking guy named Noah who can not only play the guitar, but who has also an insanely great voice. They like each other immediately and Noah offers her to show her around the city and help her out with some errands she has to run for her mother for the wedding day. Noah also happens to be the catering Lady's grandson. And that's when the romance between Penny and Noah takes its course. The dates they have are really great and cute to read about, especially because of all the interesting spots Noah shows her and the way how they deal with each other; so respectful. The dialogues were just great and sometimes absolutely hilarious. I had to laugh out loud a lot of times while reading the book. Humor is not missing in this book. As I told you before, at first the main focus was on Penny, her anxiety and her blog; it now is on the romance between Penny and Noah, which goes pretty fast. It's really nice watchting the two getting to know each other better and becoming friends and even a little bit more. In addition to the love story of course there has to be little drama as well, some drama with her best friend Elliot and with her former best friend Megan. At the end of the book everything went really really fast - not really in a good way though. The whole thing that happend in the end was to abrupt. I was kind of overwhelmed because at first I didn't really realize what just has happened. But anyhow - even though I thought it was a little bit over the top I still couldn't put the book down. I just had to know what would happen next. It might have been quite a little over the top sometimes, but I think that all readers get the message that media today simply has to much power and spreads lies just to get what they want. It's an interesting and an important issue that I thought was a good idea to put it in the book. At the last pages it kind of felt like that all the emotions that have been there before were gone - I just got the feeling that she just wanted to get the story over with; to end the book and that's why she didn't concentrate too much on the end - maybe -. At least that's the feeling I've gotten when I was reading the last few pages. In my opinion it would have been much nicer when she'd wrote some more pages. Nevertheless I could not put the book down. I had so much fun while reading it. Even the writing style was very pleasant, very suitable for the age of the main characters and - as I mentioned before - the whole books is really really funny. The only thing that kind of disappointed me, even though I don't know Zoe at all is that she didn't really write the whole book all by herself. It was confirmed that it was ghostwritten. Even though that Zoe claims that all the characters and the whole plot was created by her, I still think that it takes much more to write a book than just creating the characters. You also have to write it. I mean if the book only got published because of money or whatever - that's really sad, because there are so many talented writers out there who will never really get the chance to get one of their stories published because they are just random people and not a celeb on YouTube. Girl Online is a very sweet, charming and romantic love story with some interesting topics, a good message, plenty of humor and great characters. I liked all of them and I have to admit that I definitely became a fan of Noah. The book embodies its own magic. I am really excited about this book and I can definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to read a nice, cute and very charming love story.
