So, if you've read "The Giver" and are eager to find out how Jonas and Gabriel make their way to a better future, this is not it. However, what you will find is another story in an utopian setting which has the ability to warm your heart - because for me it did. At first I stayed apprehensive and waited for the two stories to tie in together, but it only took a few pages until I was so immersed in this new storyline that I almost forgot about part one. For me, the new protagonist Kira is even more relatable and interesting because she has feelings, which she can transport to the readers as well. She's grown up in difficult circumstances in another community, but surprisingly gets a chance to enter a seemingly better life. Even though there is not much action, her thoughts and especially her loved ones (two little children, a boy her age, an middle-aged man and an old woman) become so intriguing that I didn't want to put the book down. For me, the story has everything I want from a book: different and heartwarming characters, the creation of a clear mental image of this alternative world, twists and turns (without getting too confusing), room to guess (and be right, but not sure). I really enjoyed "Gathering Blue" and hope that some of you can, too.
Very disappointing. Especially if you read the giver before. As a stand alone book it’s okay, but beast? Idk. Also the main plot starts way too late in my opinion and is also very predictable. But regardless I have to say that the one sentence that gives a hint at Jonas’ future, excited me and I’ll probably read the other parts.
The renegade boy and the bent-tailed dog Man I enjoyed this one. I read the first book „The Giver“ right before, so at first I was quite confused as there seemed to be no connection between whatsoever, but after a while I didn’t care anymore. There are a billion reviews on this book already so I don’t even want to talk about the plot. What I want to focus on is Lois Lowry‘s writing…. Because HOLY The way both books are written is just easy to read and fascinating in a way you don’t want to put the books down. The two main characters - Kira and Thomas were incredibly complex - which I love! But also every other character had their depth. The ending - I didn’t expect at all! The mystery through the book is incredible and I just wanted to read more about the „beasts“. But there is still a lot of open plot about certain plots that I hope will be continued in #3 and #4. Quite the open ending - like the prequel. Lowry seems to like endings where the reader has a lot to interpret what they think is going to happen I loved this book and will definitely read the next two books as well! What can I say I’ve fallen in love with Lowry’s writing and that’s it really
