'Reads like a house on fire' - the extraordinary new novel by Iain Reid, the acclaimed author of I’m Thinking of Ending Things  You think you know everything about your life.   Long-married couple Junior and Henrietta live a quiet, solitary life on their farm, where they work at the local feed mill and raise chickens. Their lives are simple, straightforward, uncomplicated.Until everything you think you know collapses. Until the day a stranger arrives at their door with alarming news: Junior has been chosen to take an extraordinary journey, a journey across both time and distance, while Hen remains at home. Junior will be gone for years. But Hen won't be left alone.Who can you trust if you can't even trust yourself?   As the time for his departure draws nearer, Junior finds himself questioning everything about his life - even whether it's really his life at all.  An eerily entrancing page-turner, Foe churns with unease and suspense from the first words to its shocking finale.

"We don't get visitors. Not out here. We never have." Iain Reid's psychological science fiction thriller is about the married couple Junior and Hen, who live on a quiet farm, far from the big city. But, one day, when a stranger - Terrance - stands at their doorstep, the lives of Junior and Hen change forever. Junior was chosen to travel far from the farm. Without having a choice, the two of them have to prepare for the apparently inevitable and relearn how to communicate with each other in this difficult time. Nothing is as it used to be because the future remains very much uncertain. “Foe” is immersive, delves deep into the thoughts of Junior, who does not want to accept the situation in which the two of them find themselves. It is a “what if” scenario, in which the couple has to find a balance between everyday life and anticipation while also having to be careful not to lose sight of each other. Most of the descriptions are very simple, but still radiate strength in the story that is a rather quick read. The chapters are very short and all stimulate thought. All in all, “Foe” doesn't follow regular plot points, but slowly shows the progress of the characters' relationships. Overall, there's just not a lot happening. The beginning and the end are the most exciting thing in the whole story, but I could also find significant interest in the comparatively slow mid-section. If you read between the lines, you can already guess how the story will eventually come to an end. I give “Foe” 4/5 stars and can recommend the book with a clear conscience!

Trotz der Vorhersehbarkeit ein starkes Ende.
