Rarely have I read a book that has had such a powerful emotional and psychological impact on me. This is a book that is most definitely not for the faint of heart or weak of mind. Filth is hard-hitting, raw, deep, pure hardcore emotion. It is impossible to put this book into words, for as much as I am trying to do that right now. I have wanted to read this book ever since I first saw the film when it was released in 2o14. Unfortunately, living outside of the UK makes it really difficult to get Irvine Welsch books unless you order them online. I finally gave into temptation and ordered it and I have to say it is one of the best literary purchases I have made in a very long time. From the very first moment I was gripped. The fact that Welsh writes the story in a thick scottish dialect was in no way detrimental to the story and nor did it prove anything other than a benefit to the story. The character of Bruce Robertson is pure testosterone driven, alpha-male arrogance and following his journey (descent) throughout this book is a reward in and of itself. But be warned. Like I said at the beginning of this review, this book is not for the faint of heart. Welsh uses imagery and language that would make most anybody blush and squirm, he uses ideas and literary tools in a way that can only be described as genius. Oh and one more thing, that ending!!!! I refuse to give any spoilers in any of my reviews, but the ending of this book left me literally open mouthed and speechless! A mixture of detective novel, pulp fiction and psychological thriller, I can only recommend this book to anybody who feels like the have the stomach to read it.
