"Field Rules" follows Olivia and Rick, a PhD student and a field worker, both in the field of archaeology, as they meet again to work together, years after they had a fling on their very first dig that had them thrown out. Olivia hasn't been brave enough to get out into the field, while Rick has given up academia. Both still harbour resentment over how it ended, but also still fondness for each other, and they quickly find out they still like each other as much as they did when they were teens. Their past, their visions for the future, a hard-ass superior and their own doubts and insecurities throw them some curveballs, but in the end, they end up together. In between, they also face some troubles in their working lives and have to supervise students. I really enjoyed the writing style and for the first half, I was really enamored with this book. In the second half, there was a bit too much of an "on-off" vibe going on, which I don't really like all that much. The troubles they faced were well mapped out over the course of the story, but if they have already committed to each other, but would rather break it off than communicate with each other, that turns me off. In overall, I still very much enjoyed it, even if, as a fan of slow-burns, the second half was a bit slower going and less exciting for me. But I enjoyed the general arc of their relationship and their characters and the author has a great writing style! Very happy about having picked up this book.
