RTC It took me way longer to finish this book than I had anticipated. :| ------- You can read my review here: http://storypals.net/book-report-faithful-by-alice-hoffman/ FAITHFUL BY ALICE HOFFMAN I had wanted this book bad, the idea, the plot and the cover all of it had intrigued me. The vibe that I got from this book was Cecelia Ahern like. Hence, I went ahead and asked for a review copy. I was lucky enough to have received it by Simon&Schuster India. WHAT IS FAITHFUL ALL ABOUT? Growing up on Long Island, Shelby Richmond is an ordinary girl until one night an extraordinary tragedy changes her fate. Her best friend’s future is destroyed in an accident, while Shelby walks away with the burden of guilt. What happens when a life is turned inside out? When love is something so distant it may as well be a star in the sky? Faithful is the story of a survivor, filled with emotion—from dark suffering to true happiness—a moving portrait of a young woman finding her way in the modern world. A fan of Chinese food, dogs, bookstores, and men she should stay away from, Shelby has to fight her way back to her own future. In New York City she finds a circle of lost and found souls—including an angel who’s been watching over her ever since that fateful icy night. Here is a character you will fall in love with, so believable and real and endearing, that she captures both the ache of loneliness and the joy of finding yourself at last. For anyone who’s ever been a hurt teenager, for every mother of a daughter who has lost her way, Faithful is a roadmap. MY REVIEW FOR FAITHFUL Oh boy, it has been over one and a half month to me reading this book, I have been so slow with my reviews and actually sitting down to write blogs. Hence I apologize beforehand of the review is not as detailed or gives you proper insight to the book. NOTE: I would say the book has some good triggers and if you are going through some issues, please do not pick up this book for now. Coming back to the review, the book is not what I had anticipated at all, it was quite different and it did leave quite a mark on me. This being my first Alice Hoffman book, I can’t quite critic if it is one of the best or the worst books, but definitely a very well written book if nothing else, every word has been carefully used to give it a very mystical feeling to it, so yes even when I wasn’t really enjoying the storyline, there was a definite attraction towards the writing style. However, I have my own reasons for not really enjoying the book as much: The story moves quite slowly even after it moving on the timeline quite fast. The way the survivor’s guilt has been treated in the book..? The depression and mental health of Shelby, I really did not appreciate the way the character was taken care of. The characters in this book are shown to be quite weak. People go through a lot more and yet they do not end up with drugs and ruining your life, we go on with our lives. We should go on with our lives. That’s how it should be right? I was in for a friendship-oriented story- something with a big revelation in the end. I didn’t get that and I was very disappointed. The characters weren’t very relatable and the stories/ back-end story felt more made up then real. No magic realism. 🙁 No Cecelia Ahern car, which made it even more difficult for me to go on with the book. All this being said I think I wouldn’t have read the whole book if I wasn’t so into reading the book in the first place. So pick it up if the plot really intrigues you.
