_________

I was dreading the Cunningham family reunion even before the first murder.

Before the storm stranded us at the mountain resort.

The thing is, us Cunninghams don't really get along.

We've only got one thing in common: we've all killed someone.

When they find the first body in the snow, it's clear that only a Cunningham could have committed the crime - and it's up to me to prove it.

There are plenty of killers in my family. But only one murderer . . .

Such a fun read!

I loved the way it was written, the humour, the characters and the way information was revealed but by bit, both about the current events as well as the history of the characters.

"Everyone in my family has killed someone" starts off with the story of how the protagonist's brother killed someone. I thought it would continue like this, going into details of how Ernest's family have killed people one by one, but instead it continued after this with a mostly linear story of things that happened after, while learning how his family have killed in bits and pieces. Due to this, this felt more like a detective novel than like "How to Kill Your Family" as I assumed before I started this book. As I like detective fiction, I ended up liking this. This book has a lot of fourth wall breaks, as it is written as if the protagonist had written and published the book after the events of the book had taken place, and in the end I can look back at those parts as a whole and say it fit well and enjoyed quite a few of those parts. While reading it, though, I had problems with it in the beginning, as some of the early fourth walls breaks sounded like the book didn't take itself seriously and that is something I don't enjoy, or at least that didn't fit with the rest of the book. I listened to this on audiobook, and I liked that there were a few changes made to the fourth wall breaks to account for that. It did make the author's note a bit weird, since it talked about page numbers, while it was chapter numbers in the audiobook, but it did make me feel like they put a lot of thought into the audiobook. The plot was very enjoyable, but I don't have anything specific to say about it. I liked this book, I liked following along. I didn't always follow the reasoning, but I mostly assumed that was because I was listening inattentively or possibly while passing traffic, and I couldn't just page through the book to find the passage the narrator was referring to. I loved the twists and I enjoyed the things we found out had happened beforehand and why.

Everyone reading this has killed someone. - Just kidding! .. or not?

It's a "who dunnit" story with lots of twists and turns and a fair chance to get involved in solving the crime yourself. I love media that is meta and this book (or rather this author) has mastered this perfectly. I really enjoyed the book, I laughed often and for a long time before I could continue reading. The story was exciting right up to the last page! Tip: Don't give the book to your family as a present as it could be interpreted as an invitation ;) I'm already looking forward to the second book (and the TV series) :)
