I neither can't motivate myself to skip this book entirely nor to keep on reading. I am stuck around page 350 for weeks, I usually prefer to start a new book than to finish this one and that isn't a good sign for me. My actual rating is more based on my personal motivation to read and recommend this book, I probably belong to a minority here to actually don't like this book based on the other ratings and reviews. Overall the story is interesting, insect-kinden sounds like one of a kind and the dark plot is perfectly suited for me. I am never afraid of complicated books and I don't mind when a story needs some time before you start understanding it - I am a Steven Erikson fan after all. So why is it difficult for me to keep on reading? The base story is about the wasp empire conquering the world (a world that is mostly unknown to the normal ant or beetle) and a group of veterans from a previous war against the wasps. This group tries to warn the known world about the approaching danger, fails to do that and tries to prepare for the danger on its own for years. When the wasps conquer a city, it is always a complete victory without any escapees that flee to other cities. In fact there is no communication between the heads of the various cities at all. Actually I don't understand why no one tries to believe these warnings, they should have some experience with conquerors from their history. (There are other villainous like the moth and mantis.) The political system in this world is as mysterious s the whole appearance of the races. Talking about appearances, I have no idea how they look like. The author usually just mentions, that some of them can fly, have a smaller or broader build or other softskills like being capable in mechanics. No wonder that the wasps are conqueror, consider they can fly AND shoot some kind of fireballs. Further the turn of the events with the escape, one of the kids captive and the rescue from the slave camp is really odd. I am fully aware, that the behavior of the wasp commander/agent might be part of a plot, that is important for the future. Also I just can't stand the whiny demeanor of Stenwold Maker is just too much for me.
