I ... honestly don't know what to think about this book. I can't quite decide whether I enjoyed it or not. Uff. This is probably because I found some parts of the book utterly disturbing. Not in a Stephen King super-scary kind of way, more in a "oh no, you didn't do THAT"-way. I can't go into further detail without spoiling a bit of the novel, but trust me ... it has some really weird parts in it. The story itself - the Tanner sisters gone missing for three years - was not interesting at all. There was no character I particularly liked or disliked, the way of telling the story was okayish but nothing that will stick with me for very long. As you can see, I am very uncertain on how to rate "Emma in the night". I have the feeling (for now), that it is more of a 2.5* rating instead of a 3 * rating. I ... this book just left me utterly confused and questioning my entire life.
This is marketed as a mystery thriller which I would say is the correct genre for this story. There are some thrilling elements but it is mainly about the mystery of the two sisters. I had really high hopes for this but in the end it ended up being just okay for me. The story itself was quite interesting and I wanted to find out what the twist was but I just couldn’t really find a connection with most of the characters. The only person I actually liked was the half-brother. Also, the writing was not doing me any favours. It was quite a slow burn for most of the story which wasn’t the right choice for my reading taste with that type of story I guess. However, I can totally see how other people might enjoy this. There are some weird family dynamics and secrets to unravel and you really want to know what actually happened when the sisters went missing since you will know right from the start that Cass is not telling the whole story! ✨ 3/5 stars ✨
