This book on one hand is one of the best ones I’ve ever read but I also cannot ignore the fact it took me three months to finish and felt laborious at times. The world building in this work is truly magnificent and unlike anything I have ever read before. But this sadly is also its demise in my eyes. Being thrown right in the deep end left me with a certain level of confusion I never managed to fully remove. I cannot wait to read up on this book more online, read reviews and especially also watch the movies. It truly is intriguing
After finishing this book I still don’t really know what it’s about
F. Herbert has a nice and poetic style of writing, but he made every character talk in these weird poetic ways. Also Herbert really s*cks at setting a scene. E.g. he sets the scene inside a house, then a character is walking all of a sudden through sand… 2 pages on an he tells you “oh by the way, there was a sandstorm, that’s why there’s sand in the house” - that’s symbolic for the whole book. Also there are some cool unforeseen plot twists, though they too, come out of nowhere without any explanation. Not sure yet if I’ll keep on reading Dune.
Langatmig mit wenig Spannung
Ich bin ein großer Fan davon erst ein Buch zu lesen bevor ich den entsprechenden Film dazu gucke um die filmische Umsetzung besser beurteilen zu können. So auch bei Dune, ein Film welcher innerhalb meines Freund*innenkreises tendenziell positive bewertet wurde, entsprechend hoch waren wahrscheinlich auch meine Erwartungen an das Buch. Besonders am Anfang ist es schwer einen Einstieg zu finden, da viele fiktive Wörter verwendet werden, die dazu führen, dass man recht lange braucht um in die Handlung einzusteigen. Bis Seite 300 war dadurch für mich keine Spannung vorhanden, aber auch der restliche Teil des Buches hatte größtenteils langatmige Kapitel mit aus meiner Sicht oftmals irrealsten Informationen. Die Tatsache, dass das Buch bereits von 1965 ist spiegelt sich auch stark im Schreibstil wieder welcher sich an vielen Stellen unnatürlich anfühlt. Besonders gestört hat mich, dass viele Sachen angeschnitten werden, die dann im restlichen Buch einfach keine weitere Rolle spielen. Von anderen habe ich gehört, dass es in den darauffolgenden Teilen besser wird, weshalb ich nun wiederum am hadern bin, ob man dem zweiten Teil eine Chance geben sollte. Alles in allem ist es aber eine persönliche Meinung und since fiction vielleicht auch nicht zu 100% mein Genre.

The story is very compelling but it’s not exactly my favourite narrative style: many infinite. The register is quasi archaic. Not so attentive editing too: my edition had various mistakes
Großartige Geschichte
This is a must-read book. I picked it up after I saw the Dune movie in 2021 and I could kick myself for never reading it before. The book brings so much different themes to the table; fate & free will, politics, ecology, traditions & customs and so on. I can‘t wait to dive more into the world of Dune and what the rest of the story will bring. — — "A process cannot be understood by stopping it. Habe ich dieses Buch damals geliebt.
Das hat mich wirklich so gar nicht abgeholt. Hab bei Seite 600 von 740 aufgegeben, weil es mich wirklich einfach nicht interessiert hat.
