Death. But not for you, Gunslinger — never for you. I put of rereading the Dark Tower for quite a while, knowing I would not be able to replicate the —oh, how to describe this accurately? — almost spiritual experience I had all these years ago. But even then — still, I was scared I would not be able to love this book (and the series as a whole) as I did previously. I‘m so glad I was wrong to fear. Two firsts still: First time as an audiobook. First time in english. Surprisingly, I prefer the German translation — maybe for the same reason I prefer the German version of The Lord of the Rings — simple nostalgia and the comfort of familiarity. Sadly, I really do not like the German voice actor for the Dark Tower audiobooks, so continuing in English I will. Similarly to my rereads of the first volume, I was again surprised how much the ending of the series is foreshadowed in so many small bits of dialogue and descriptions. Nothing an unsuspecting reader will notice — and that‘s exactly what makes it good. King clearly trusted his readers would understand — in time. While a part of me still mourns the layer of the Tower where the entirety of the Dark Tower saga is written in the style of the commonly despised Gunslinger — probably my most controversial opinion to date to consider it my favourite - I am content with what I have. There is a layer of the Tower where I am ignorant of its existence, after all. He would come to the Dark Tower and there he would sing their names; there he would sing their names; there he would sing all their names. ___ No change to the rating made: 3.5 stars .
