Don't judge a book by its cover... Or its first half for that matter. 🐸
If you want to make absolutely sure Merry does something, tell her not to. I was deeply annoyed by this book for the better part of over 200 pages. Yes, over 200. The world building featured great ideas (uncanny magical cooperations!) but didn't get enough screentime. I was just supposed to know what Name is a person, place, village, school, corporation... I was annoyed by feeling like I missed something. ⚠️ Plot not mentioned in the blurb included ahead ⚠️ Also, I just didn't like the protagonist: Merry, a 17 year old living alone with her Dad in a small village, has to choose between her now very manly and muscular childhood best friend and the mysterious and glittery beautiful boy from a rich but seclusive family as her love interest. Sooo... I'm just not a fan of love triangles. But it also seemed like a significant part of the book has been shortened? At no point was I able to learn ~why~ Merry felt the way she did. Her feelings just happened and they happened a lot. All that said, around the 50% mark, the book surprisingly turned out to be a good one! It was creepy and thrilling and Merry was still stubborn to the point of stupid, but at least she questioned her own actions like an intelligent human being. After a very promising third fourth, the ending included some very handy coincidences and easy explanations I wasn't too happy with. My verdict? I would absolutely read more books by this author, because I see a lot of potential.
