This was really interesting. The story reminded me of Perfume by Patrick Süßkind, telling the life of a person that is a murderer but also a genius. Erik is a terrible person without a doubt, he has been made cruel by the people around him and his deformation. I think most of the book is well ballanced in portraying him as a villian as well as a tortured soul. The various stations of his life are interestingly told and build well on each other. I read reviews which said the book would have been better if it ended when he met Christine and I can totally see that. Reading this part, I wasn't sure what the reader was supposed to be feeling. Some reviews describe it as a romantic love story, but actually for me it was one more of his crimes even if he had his own set of morals keeping him from making it even worse. Christine is naïve and easy to manipulate, I felt sorry for her and wasn't sure if the author wanted me to ship her with Erik or see her escape. Even though the last 100 pages weren't as precisely framed as the rest of it, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing was nice and didn't waste time, the characters were very flawed and fascinating and maybe it is even intentional that everyone can think of Erik and his relationship to Christine what pleases them most.
Was soll ich sagen?
