Claudia Rankine's bold new book recounts mounting racial aggressions in ongoing encounters in twenty-first-century daily life and in the media. Some of these encounters are slights, seeming slips of the tongue, and some are intentional offensives in the classroom, at the supermarket, at home, on the tennis court with Serena Williams and the soccer field with Zinedine Zidane, online, on TV-everywhere, all the time. The accumulative stresses come to bear on a person's ability to speak, perform, and stay alive. Our addressability is tied to the state of our belonging, Rankine argues, as are our assumptions and expectations of citizenship. In essay, image, and poetry, Citizen is a powerful testament to the individual and collective effects of racism in our contemporary, often named "post-race" society.

Meine Erwartungen wurden übertroffen!
Da ich Citizen für die Uni lesen musste, habe ich mich wirklich gefragt, ob es mir gefallen wird. Poetische Texte, ja beinahe Lyrik ist nicht wirklich mein Genre, aber diese Tiefgründigkeit. Wow. Das hatte was. Die Autorin spricht Rassismus authentisch an und zeigt die Probleme realistisch auf. Ich war geschockt, wie schlimm es für betroffene Personen wirklich ist und frage mich sehr, wie Menschen die "audacity" besitzen sich dermaßen rassistisch und menschenfeindlich zu verhalten, wie in dem Buch aufgezeigt. Obwohl das Buch etwas älter ist, ist es gerade jetzt relevant, wo Rassismus stärker wird und die Menschen wieder nach Sündenböcken suchen. Durch die Art, wie Probleme aufgegriffen und beschrieben werden, kann man sich auch als Leser und nicht rassismusbetroffene Person absolut ins Thema hinein versetzen. Das macht es einfacher, in die Schuhe von anderen zu treten und erhöht das Verständnis. Ich kann es also wirklich nur weiter empfehlen, falls man sich mit gesellschaftskritischen Themen und Rassismus auseinander setzen möchte.
The parts herein felt like they were written in different styles to me. Somehow. A very inquisitive nature, a style that feels jumpy, the question of being Black in America links them together. The piece on Serena Williams captured me most, while the various situations shown that point out how micro aggressions feel and look like are probably the part many white people need to hear most. This collection is now as timely as ever.
