Für mich sind - im positiven Sinne - die Bücher vom Autorenduo James Corey Actionfilme in Papierform. Dies gelingt nicht vielen und die Expanse Reihe ist eine der wenigen Reihen, bei der mir der Stil gefällt. „Cibola Burn“ ist der vierte Teil und es gibt diesen auch auf Deutsch. Auch hier empfehle ich, die Bücher in der richtigen Reihenfolge zu lesen, weil es doch Anspielungen, wiederkehrende Charaktere und gewisse Handlungs“schnipsel“ gibt, die sich dadurch deutlich besser einordnen lassen. Dieses Mal verschlägt es James Holden und seine Crew auf den lebensfeindlichen Planeten Ilus. Dort treffen Siedler auf ein Kolonisierungsschiff, das Ilus besetzen und bewirtschaften will. Eigentlich soll die Crew um James Holden zwischen den Parteien vermitteln, aber manchmal entwickeln sich die Dinge anders als erwartet… Mir hat der Planet Ilus unheimlich gut gefallen. Den Autoren gelang es, die Unwirtlichkeit und damit den Kampf ums Überleben gut darzustellen. Vor allem zeigten sie auf, wie Menschen in Extremsituation reagieren und wie unterschiedlich der Mensch mit Katastrophen umgeht. Und dass die Grenze zwischen Gut und Böse fließend ist - und auch sehr abhängig von der eigenen Perspektive ist. Insgesamt liebe ich es, mit jedem Buch aus der Expanse Serie das Universum weiter zu erforschen und mich mit der Crew der Rocinante in den dunklen Raum vorzuwagen. Die Bücher sind für mich klassische Science Fiction: neue Welten in der Zukunft, technischer Schnickschnack und Gefechte im All. Gleichzeitig ist die Welt auch sehr vielfältig, was das Thema Familienstrukturen und Beziehung angeht, ohne dass queere Themen besonders im Vordergrund stehen. Sie sind einfach ein Teil der Welt.

4.75/5 Best ending of any book in the expanse so far. The themes in this were done brilliantly, the world was perfect, the characters... man. I will admit that Havelock and Basia are boring people, but they had their role in the story and I don't consider that a fault in the story writing. The Elvi and Miller connection at the end of this was chilling. Murtry was my favourite new character for this entry. I can't wait to read the rest of this. "A person can fail the people they love just by being who they are... I will never live down not being the person my wife needed after she spent twenty years waitin' for me. I can never make that right. Don't go feelin' sorry for yourself. You fucked up. You failed the people you love.They're payin' the price for it right now and you demean them every second you don't own that shit." There is a struggle at the end. People, building on the ruins of what had come before, just like they always did. So many things had been lost, but it was the missing people that hurt the most. Just like they always did.
