Beschreibung

'... a human being, an intellectual human being who constantly bends the entire force of his mind on the ridiculous task of forcing a wooden king into the corner of a wooden board, and does it without going mad!' A group of passengers on a cruise ship challenge the world chess champion to a match. At first, they crumble, until they are helped by whispered advice from a stranger in the crowd - a man who will risk everything to win. Stefan Zweig's acclaimed novella Chess is a disturbing, intensely dramatic depiction of obsession and the price of genius.

Interesting meditation on absorption, mania and genius. Anyone who has ever played Tetris for slightly too long and then tried to sleep only to find their mind aimlessly arranging blocks will understand what the novel is describing and how unhealthy it is- the final thesis is that only an idiot could survive immersing themselves in a monomaniacal state. I’m not sure that’s true but this is an interesting story and as usual, an easy read. Those who are bothered by such things will as usual be annoyed by Zweigs love of gentility and aristocracy.
