I saw the author of this book promote it on instagram so that’s why I read it. Now I kinda wish I hadn’t. The story in itself was promising. The setting was interesting and the characters were diverse. An elite art school in France and (sort of) academic rivals looks good enough at first glance, right? Well, that may be true, but there are other parts to a book, like the spelling and grammar for example. I almost can’t believe that somebody has proofread this. There were so many spelling mistakes, wrong commas or question signs and also translation mistakes. If you’re talking to a friend - or your LOVER - in french, you DON’T use ‘vous’. I can’t fathom how a story can be published like this. It feels like it’s just the first, unedited draft. There definitely should’ve been a lot of editing before publishing this. I had to force myself to constantly overlook those mistakes in order to follow the plot. I kept on hoping throughout the whole book that it would get better. The story wasn’t even that bad but I do think that it wasn’t necessary for it to be 470 pages long. This book could’ve easily been 200 pages shorter and there wouldn’t have been a great loss in my eyes. For the amount this book annoyed me it took me definitely too long to read. I’m a little mad at myself for not just putting it down and dnf-ing it. I think that would’ve made me much happier. Unfortunately I can’t recommend it.
