This has the perfect length for the story it wants to tell and I totally vibe with the writing. I was intrigued by the short mystery, there are scenes that really leave an impact and i love how Daniel Greene does not shy away from - a lot of things, really. Some things worked less for me, though. Quite a lot of information was left open, like the bigger implications of the events and large parts of the world building, which felt intentional and leaves me wanting more, but also just a bit more context would have gone a long way. The protagonists weren't my favorite character types and the strong competitiveness between them just isn't a trope I care for. They also didn't feel as competent as they should, although I understand that this situation is like nothing they ever dealt with before and their reactions helped to transport emotions. Sometimes, the author goes over the top to make a point: I don't need that police man to be the best in the whole continent or a family to improve their profit by over 1000%. Despite that I enjoyed the experience quite a lot. If you know the authors review work, some influences are noticeable but it still feels like his own style. As with most debuts, there is room to grow.
A Great Debut! For those not in the know, the author of this novella, Daniel Greene is one of the leading YouTubers covering the realm of Fantasy Fiction. He is indirectly responsible for introducing me, and many others to authors such as Brandon Sanderson, Evan Winter, R F Kiang, Robert Jordan and many many more. So, there was undoubtedly be a lot of expectation when he announced that he was publishing his very own work of fantasy fiction. I believe he has met those expectations head on. Is it perfect? No, you can definitely tell this is an author still honing his craft. But he has painted a picture of a world I desperately want to explore more of, full of amazing intrigue, one that feels could be explored in book upon book and still leave stuff seeping off the page. I'm excited that this is only the beginning!
When Scribd had recommended this book to me, I gasped. I will add his future books to my library when I can. I have been following Daniel and loving his content for three years now (ie. since I found out about booktube). It is the first book that I read that I am just a little bit familiar with the author's personality. It made the reading process quite interesting for sure. Regardless, I think this is a solid debut and am excited to see what is coming next. I liked how easily I could imagine his writing. My favourite thing about this book is that thankfully the author didn't shy away from writing gore. When people talk about how disgustingly bloody a book is, they usually mean: "ooh, someone got shot in their eyes, what a be sure to turn your head in terror scene for my imagination" or something like that. However, I assure you that this is utterly gruesome, and I loved it with all the blood in my veins. The thing I am not a fan of, though, is the characters. I just couldn't vibe with any of them. Their dialogues felt a bit off (just like this review), and sometimes the book read like the beginning of a video game. It's not necessarily a terrible thing in my book, but it slightly bothered me. So, especially, the banter between characters needs some improvement. Knowing how eloquent Daniel is with words makes me expect dialogues that flow easier than these from him. I have watched a couple of reviews when it came out (and forgotten all of them, because that's how my brain works) and I believe he will be mindful of those criticisms while creating his future works. Lastly, It made me overjoyous to see that the baddy talked in bold texts. I wonder if it was an inspiration from Death in Discworld (not that Death is a baddy, he is absolutely lovely).
