Beschreibung

Inquisitor Glokta, a crippled and increasingly bitter relic of the last war, former fencing champion turned torturer extraordinaire, is trapped in a twisted and broken body - not that he allows it to distract him from his daily routine of torturing smugglers.
Nobleman, dashing officer and would-be fencing champion Captain Jezal dan Luthar is living a life of ease by cheating his friends at cards. Vain, shallow, selfish and self-obsessed, the biggest blot on his horizon is having to get out of bed in the morning to train with obsessive and boring old men.
And Logen Ninefingers, an infamous warrior with a bloody past, is about to wake up in a hole in the snow with plans to settle a blood feud with Bethod, the new King of the Northmen, once and for all - ideally by running away from it. But as he's discovering, old habits die really, really hard indeed...
...especially when Bayaz gets involved. A bald old man with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a spectacular fraud, but whatever he is, he's about to make the lives of Glotka, Jezal and Logen a whole lot more difficult...

Where should I begin? Before They Are Hanged ended up being everything I had wished for after finishing the ride that was The Blade Itself. I am in awe of the way certain characters that are utterly unlikeable in the first instalment are developed in the second one. Jezal Luthar for instance becomes one of my favourites, after the hardships he endures, the lessons he learn and realizations he makes. But also Glokta shows more sides of himself during his truthseeking endeavors. I still get the feeling though that Before They Are Hanged is just a preparation for the utter ride that The Last Argument of Kings will be. And for that I am more than stoked. This book made everything we had a little better. The battles were more strategic and large form. The characters had more hardships to go through. And most of all, did the consequences feel even more real. I am more than excited of what's to come.

Another wonderful entry in the series. Just as dark, intriguing and weirdly funny as the first one, with a lot of little twists and revelation and great developements for the characters. I just adore it.

Starts slow but gets really good. Relatable, multi-faceted characters that grow and change in the course of the story. A special mention for detailed and really good descriptions of fights, whether it's a small band of rogues or a huge battlefield between empires. The ending is quite a cliff-hanger.
