This book was really effective in making me feel like its protagonist. It was tense and dragging me down, draining me, though I still couldn't put it down. I enjoyed it despite how hard it was to read. For a lot of it, I wasn't sure if this was really a thriller or rather a hard hitting contemporary novel with the thriller elements coming purely from the mind of Christine. I won't give it away, but I loved how I wasn't sure if people were manipulating or protecting her. The book was really good and the fact that it was written as Christine's journal made it even more effective. I don't care much for the ending, though. It was too simple and rushed compared with everything that came before, but it wasn't destroying my experience, either.

2.5/5 The concept was very intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat most of the time. But two main things really ruined this: 1) the ending. It was a very open ending, which I just don't like. In addition to that was it way too easy and, in my impression, nice for this genre. I'm just not used to mystery/thrillers ending happily so I was honestly disappointed that it didn't go full disturbing at the end. 2) the sex scenes/relationship stuff. First it was kinda uncomfortable reading this knowing a male author had written about this female characters sex dreams and body issues? Two main events strike out as being gross/weird: one was Christine had multiple sex scenes in which she wasn't sure if she wanted it or not cause her memories got mixed. But oh "the need" just gave in so it was fine anyways! Also she multiple times thought "I am asking for this" which, like, wow that's gross. Secondly *spoiler* she knew she had been pregnant because she had stretch marks... yeah no buddy Overall was the concept just way better than the actual execution.

I really enjoyed this one. I had an idea of what was going on eager the end but really liked the story and the characters. It was a very good insight to what it would be like to lose your memory over and over again, and have no idea what your life is like before you woke up. Would read it again, so I recommend it for anyone who likes a bit of a thriller

I actually enjoyed reading this book. It's a real page turner, unsettling but suspenseful. It started off so promising, i couldn't put it down - but it doesn't live up to its potential. I was truly disappointed by its ending. It seemed like the ending was written in a hurry, it wasn't satisfying and left me with too many contradictions and unanswered questions.

This book is simply awesome. Read it on two evenings because I could not stop.

Kritik: Cover: Das Cover ist das vom Movie-Tie-In. Schwarz-Weiß mit den drei Hauptfiguren. Ich find es eher langweilig, wenn ich ehrlich bin. Es hätte mich zumindest nicht darauf aufmerksam gemacht. Eindrücke: Eine toller Pageturner. Ich konnte gar nicht genug bekommen von dem Buch, so zog es mich in seinen Bann. Kaum den Prolog gelesen, der mit einem einzigen Satz Neugierde auf die nächsten zweihundert Seiten geweckt hat. Dann Christines Journal, das einen in ihren Bann zieht. Ich fand die Vorstellung, meine Erinnerungen immer wieder zu verlieren und ganz auf die Information anderer angewiesen zu sein, irgendwie gruselig. Auch beim Lesen schauerte es mich manchmal. Mit der Auflösung der Geschichte hatte ich so nicht gerechnet. Zwar hatte ich zwischenzeitlich auch mal so eine Idee, doch habe ich sie schnell verworfen aus verschiedenen Gründen. Genau wie Christine hab ich mich täuschen lassen. Es war faszinierend zusammen mit Christine ihre Erinnerungen wieder zusammen zu basteln und mit ihr auf Ursachensuche zu gehen, Die letzten Hundert Seiten hab ich dann auch fast durchgelesen, weil ich einfach wissen musste, was los ist. Charaktere: Christine ist die Hauptfigur, die durch ein Ereignis, an das sie sich nicht erinnern kann, jeden Tag aufs neue beginnt. Jeden Tag muss ihr jemand ihr Leben erklären, weil sie sich an die letzten Jahre einfach nicht erinnern kann. Dadurch ist sie sehr abhängig von den Informationen, die ihr ihre vertrauten Menschen geben. Doch kann sie denen trauen. Wem kann sie trauen? Die Fragen stellen sich mit zunehmender Zeit, vor allem nachdem sie mit ihrem Journal begonnen hat. Ich konnte mich gut in sie hineinversetzen. Zum anderen sind da Dr. Nash und Ben, die beiden Männer in Christines Leben. Die zwei Menschen, die maßgeblich ihr Bild von sich und ihrem Leben prägen. Doch sagen sie ihr immer die Wahrheit? Ich hatte immer wieder Zweifel bei beiden, doch die Auflösung hat mich überrascht. Dr. Nash war mir immer sympathisch, zu ihm hätte ich auch Vertrauen. Engagiert, motiviert. Stil/Gliederung: Die Kapitel waren teilweise äußerst lang, was ich ja nicht so mag. Aber die Idee mit dem Journal, das die Geschichte aus Christines Sicht erzählt, fand ich wiederum ziemlich gelungen. Auch die Sprache an sich war sehr bildlich ohne zu ausufernd zu sein. Fazit: Ich fand das Buch nie langweilig. Theorien spukten durch meinen Kopf, was wohl dahinter stecken könnte. Die Charaktere waren authentisch und sympathisch. Die Handlung war für mich einigermaßen schlüssig, wenn sie auch ein paar Ungereimtheiten bei näherer Betrachtung nicht verleugnen kann. Dennoch eine absolute Leseempfehlung. Da der Film keine guten Kritiken bekommen hat, empfehle ich erst das Buch zu lesen, denn das hat zumindest mich total überzeugt.

I absolutely loved the book. I was hooked basically from the very first page and just could not stop reading. Christine is an amazingly relatable woman - pretty ordinary and yet special - and S.J. Watson was able to easily describe the most complex things with simple words. He has a fine sense of language and it was fun to read his writing and use of words. It was easily to follow the plot and to learn everything going on in the same level of understanding and pace as Christine due to her memory loss. She was never ahead and so every suspicion and doubt was totally relatable and made perfect sense. I really liked the ending and now I’m dying to see the movie which I have actually never heard of before. Concluding, I can also add that I’m glad I tried a thriller and I’m sure more will follow, occasionally. 😊
