As a lemming & snowflake myself…

I just felt this book on a whole other level. I love Holly Bourne’s book because they feel so easy and still multi-dimensional. In this case, this was really important. I hate and love the ending, because it makes so much sense, because the story is complete and everything else would have just been for the rounded edges and that’s just not how her books work. Also, now ++ SPOILER WARNING ++ I have never READ depression and mania so authentic. This really made the book special.

1.5 stars Usually, I’m Holly Bourne’s biggest fan. Yet this book wasn’t my cup of tea. Olive, the main character, is sent off to Camp Reset – a camp for teenagers with mental illnesses. The camp is still in its piloting stage, so she gets to stay for free. She lives there with other people her age for four weeks. However, Olive was an incredibly irritating and frustrating character. She went to camp but didn’t take the advice the professionals offered her. She’s convinced she knows it better and that there is an algorithm for mental well being and after her “research” phase, she realises the “cure” is kindness. It’s a good message – treat people with kindness. But the execution was bad. She starts a group (“The Prime Numbers”) who are trying to help her spread the message but I couldn’t tell the supporting characters apart because they had absolutely no personality and where reduced to their mental illnesses. A nerdy, maths-obsessed guy falls for her. Towards the end, there’s a scene which made me incredibly uncomfortable. Olive goes into Lewis’ room in a dress without any underwear underneath. She clearly wants to have sex with him and undresses herself but Lewis tells her “’This is… going too fast. I’m not… ready.’” She plays it down: “’I have no idea what you mean.’ I smile again. God, I’m cute. There is no way he can say no to my cuteness, surely?” Olive KNEW that Lewis isn’t the guy who’d sleep with her, yet she kinda forces herself onto him. I just really disliked this scene (and Olive). The book ended abruptly and there was no real conclusion. I know that Holly Bourne can do better but this wasn’t the book for me.
