The setting of this book is a fantasy world that vaguely resembles the geography of our own. To do supernatural work, the citizen of this world can call upon angels and in exchange lose some of their life span. The rule is that the more powerful angels make you age the most. Every country has its own Archangel protecting it and it's so powerful that only the cardinals are allowed and able to summon it with high costs. The story begins with Liliath, who wakes up after having slept for more than a hundred years. She is in pursuit of a certain goal and will stop at nothing to attain it. For her plans she needs four young people - Agnez, a Musketeer, Henri, an ambitious clerk, Simeon, a large doctor, and Dorotea, a student of Icon design. I really liked those four characters who quickly became friends; especially Agnez and her fight-me-attitude. The plot of Lilath's sinister plans that wasn't discovered until the end of the book was also really interesting. Most of the protagonists were therefore more like chess pieces, and even with the chapters from Liliath's point of view it was unclear what she intended to do. Usually, such evil schemings are discovered by the protagonists, even if they can't always stop them, so it was refreshing to read something else happening. I wasn't very moved by the book, however (maybe it was because of the hard-to-foresee-plot). As soon as I sat down, though, it was easy to keep reading. The story contains a nice mixture of action and intrigue, despite the four main characters being mostly reactive. All in all, a good book!
