this was so beautiful, i'll need time to recover
First I gotta say, that Patrick Ness is my favourite author of all time and has been that since I was like 15 years old. Chaos Walking meant the world to me back then and even though I lost sight of his books for a bit, when I got back to them with More Than This I was completely obsessed again. It just felt like his books grew with me and that is not something I ever really had. And now we get to this book, which I probably would never have picked up, had any other author written it. I do have a soft spot for illustrated novels, but I have zero knowledge about Moby Dick and even less interest in actually reading it. Maybe I should, now that I actually enjoyed this story. I read this book in one single sitting. I got on a train and just started reading and didn't want to stop. The writing is beautiful, the illustrations are as gorgeous as they are sometimes scary, sometimes mind-blowing. It was a very enjoyable read, at the beginning I expected it to be more for children, but as it turned out, the story was quite dark and brutal at parts, so I would say it's more for teens. I really liked the messages this story carried, it had a whole deeper meaning and whole the ending seemed a bit crazy and weird to me, it still fit the overall feeling. I did actually have a moment of goose bumps on the last couple pages, so that speaks for how much this touched me. My only criticism would be, that I didn't really connect much to the characters and with that, some of the horrors in the story didn't really touch me the way they should have. It was also very short overall, wich fit the story, but the ending still happened a bit too fast for my taste. Anyway, I could recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed A Monster Calls and loves different, darker stories, especially ones with amazing illustrations.
