Wie dankbar bin ich wieder einmal, von einem grossartigen Buch gefunden worden zu sein! Zu Beginn war ich nicht sicher, ob diese Geschichte etwas für mich ist: Eine transformer-ähnliche Statur erscheint in New York und gerät in den Mittelpunkt einer Social Media Welt, wie wir sie heute kennen: Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, Internet-Communities... alles da... nicht unbedingt mein Beuteschema. Aber schon von Anfang konnte mich die Story packen, die Protagonisten sind sympathisch und wachsen einem in kürzester Zeit ans Herz. So banal der Grundgedanke dieser Geschichte auch klingen mag, sie hat Tiefe beinahe genau so, wie das reale Leben um dich herum eben Tiefe hat. Beschrieben wird die unwirkliche Welt der Sozial Media, der schnelle Ruhm der dabei möglich ist aber auch die Chance, die damit verbunden ist. Die Gegenüberstellung von verbindendem und ausgrenzendem Denken auf der anderen Seite und wohin dies führen kann geben der Geschichte Aktualität des heutigen Amerika, ja der momentanen Weltsituation. This was totally not what I had expected, but I loved it so much! I thought this was more going to be on the contemporary side of books, but it had a Sci-Fi element that really fit the story so well. Most of the book is concerned with a normal person suddenly getting famous because of one video, and how she deals with this fame and how she tries to make it into something positive. I feel like the author spoke out of his own heart many times in this book, just because I could feel that he knows what he was talking about. The cast of characters was super diverse, and it really fit the story perfectly as well. Couldn't recommend this enough!

RE-READ 2021 I STILL LOVE IT, BUT I GUESS A LOT MORE! UHH HANK GREEN I NEED MORE BOOKS BY YOU! ----- I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH. I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE SUCH STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT ANY OTHER BOOK I HAD READ RECENTLY. --- How is it that when you LOVE, LOVE a book, you want to talk about it, scream, shout and do things around it but when it comes to writing a review or well post about it… you just are not able to?? So well. If that didn’t make it clear, let me put it out for you. I LOVED #ABSOLUTELYREMARKABLETHING. LIKE LOVED IT SO SO MUCH, I think from January till the time I read it.. I was in an absolute slump, I was reading books but I was not as excited about them. This book came into my life, made me fall in love with reading once again, made me fall in love with the book(s) altogether. I don’t now how one does a spoiler free review without boring people to death, so I am just going to vaguely point out the things that I ABSOLUTELY REMARKABLY LOVED: The main character was a designer. Well. I am one and IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I READ ABOUT A DESIGNER AND I RELATED SO HARD!!!!! I couldn’t put the book down AT ALL. I mean , don’t you just want a book that will do that to you? Like you would just want to sit down and read and read and read!!!!!??? THE PLAYLIST, THE MUSIC. IT’S EVERYTHING!!!!!! I don’t remember laughing out loud as much in any of the books that I have read…The background score for this lovely lovely video is an example. The sly social commentary! Ah so so precious! The complex characters and all the diversity! This is bad, when you don’t write a review for long you forget all the tiny bits of it. I AM SORRY. But well— isn’t me screaming that I love it so much enough for you? Also is it possible to call someone your favourite author after reading just one book by them? Also, and oh also, Hank Green is now my favourite Green Brother. (Sorry John Green)

I received a free e-book over NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is probably overall the most interesting take I have ever read on social media fame and it manages to do this while still being a very intriguing sci-fi story and featuring a diverse cast of characters. I did start this book in a little bit of a reading slump, so I had some personal issues with getting into it, but once I did, I finished most of it in two days. The main character April May is deeply unlikeable at times, but she also has such a real voice throughout the whole story, that I still really wanted to read on and see where everything goes. I did enjoy the start of the mystery around Carl and April's rise to fame, but around the time the dream mystery started, I got a bit bored with the story. I can't completely say that now of course, since the second book isn't even out yet, but I had the feeling that the story would have been more compelling to me, had this whole dream part been condensed and maybe this not been a series but just a longer book. Still, can't really say that for sure now. I would still recommend this book especially to people who would like ti get into sci-fi, cause this is a very easy and soft start. I also loved reading about older characters again, this story just works so well with a 23 year old protagonist, a teenager would have made most of this unbelievable. I'm definitely looking forward to continuing this series.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing von Hank Green handelt von April May die in New York auf eine mysteriöse Figur trifft und zusammen mit ihrem besten Freund Andy ein Video davon macht und ins Internet stellt. Dies macht sie schlagartig berühmt denn es stellt sich heraus, dass auf der ganzen Welt solche Figuren aufgetaucht sind und ihr Video war eines der ersten welche die Figur zeigten. Grundsätzlich war An Absolutely Remarkable Thing ziemlich unterhaltsam und hat zudem auch einige interessante Themen angesprochen, beispielsweise welche Auswirkungen es auf eine Person hat wann man schlagartig berühmt wird oder auch wie wir mit Unbekanntem umgehen. Ich fand diese Ideen grundsätzlich auch ziemlich gut umgesetzt und so blieb die Geschichte eigentlich durchgehend interessant, auch wenn eigentlich bis circa zur Mitte gar nicht so viel passiert. Leider gefiel mir aber der Schreibstil nicht besonders. Die Geschichte ist aus der Sicht von April May geschrieben, als würde sie sie erzählen und wirkt dadurch sehr umgangssprachlich und ich fand teilweise auch etwas inkonsistent. April May ist auch eher eine ungewöhnliche Protagonistin, denn sie ist nicht unbedingt immer sympathisch, besonders darin wie sie mit den Personen in ihrem Umfeld umgeht, ich fand es jedoch gut, dass auch ihre Fehler aufgezeigt wurden und sie nicht als perfekt dargestellt wurde. Jedoch blieben, auch aufgrund der Erzählweise, die Nebenfiguren ziemlich blass und wirkten etwas unausgereift. Schliesslich muss ich auch noch das Ende erwähnen, welches ich leider ziemlich enttäuschend und etwas verwirrend fand. Glücklicherweise wird es jedoch noch einen zweiten Teil geben, in dem hoffentlich einige Fragen noch aufgeklärt werden.

Before I finally picked this book up a few days ago, I was convinced I would enjoy it. The story sounded intriguing, I had heard good things about it and I am of the opinion that Hank Green is in fact, a genius. In the end, the novel surpassed any expectation I had held. With incredible wit, Green tells the story of 23-year-old April May, who discovers a huge transformer-like statue in the middle of Manhattan. It turns out that these statues, the "Carls", suddenly appeared in metropoles all the world. Over night she becomes famous and is at the very centre of a history being made. With the help of her friends, and an increasingly large community, April tries to solve the mystery of the "Carls" and why they are visiting earth. "An Absolutely Remarkable Thing" is a fast-paced and thrilling read, full of twists and turns, unexpected and breath-taking. At times unnerving and distressing and always snarky and full of humor, the novel also touches on themes that are ever-present in our modern age and desperately need to be talked about. With incredible insight and reflection of what it means to be a person in the 21st century, the book portraits the impacts of social media, fame and the need for attention, the constant longing for more. This is certainly novel with a deeply flawed main character, that acts selfishly, makes a lot of mistakes and foolish choices, but remains likeable, because in the end, April May is so very human. Green manages to create story with significant impact and relevance, with exceptional truth and raw honesty and truly wonderful characters that are incredibly relatable and entirely authentic. An Absolutely Remarkable book that will stay with me, perhaps forever.

4,5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I expected something really different - more like findig out about an alien species and discovering things. It was that but only like 15% of the book. The rest was addressed how the protagonist was viewed by the world, how fame works and changed people and perceptions, how there are always different opinions and when extreme they can lead to violence. But all oh this was adressed in a fun way somehow because you are in the head of a 23 year old girl. I did really like this. It was critical without being boring or coming across as educating you

Hank Green ist der jüngere Bruder des Autors John Green und betreibt zusammen mit ihm seit 2007 den YouTube-Kanal „vlogbrothers“. Während John schon lang im Jugendbuchbereich als Autor tätig ist, beginnt Hank seine Karriere als Autor mit „An Absolutely Remarkable Thing“. Ich hatte keine großen Erwartungen an dieses Buch. Es wurde im Rahmen eines Buchclubs ausgewählt. Ich hatte zuvor noch nicht viel darüber gehört, fand aber den Klappentext recht interessant. Doch leider hat diese Geschichte so gar nicht für mich funktioniert. Beginnen wir mit der Protagonistin. April May (ernsthaft?) ist keine besonders gelungene Figur. Stellt Green sie einerseits als Aussenseiterin hin, weil sie bisexuell ist, Twitter nicht mag und lieber in Kunstmuseen geht, so verhält sie sich in anderen Situationen, insbesondere im Kontakt mit ihren Eltern, als überaus einsichtig und angepasst. Sie kümmert sich eher wenig um die Befindlichkeiten anderer und zieht ihr Ding durch, den sie, so erfahren wir sehr schnell, ist „die Auserwählte“. Immer wieder übernimmt Green seine Protagonistin und legt ihr überaus nervige, belehrende Reden über das Internet und die Gesellschaft in den Mund. Hier verschwindet die Figur vollkommen hinter dem Autor. Die restlichen Charaktere verschwinden hinter April. Sie sind substanzlos, eindimensional und agieren eher als Statisten. Die Ideen hinter dem Buch sind prinzipiell interessant: Auf der einen Seite haben wir die seltsamen Wesen, die der Menschheit Rätsel aufgeben, auf der anderen Seite stehen der plötzliche Internetruhm mit seinen angenehmen, aber auch höchst gefährlichen Seiten. Jede Idee für sich hat mir gut gefallen, aber zusammen ist es einfach „zu viel“. Beide Themen sind so stark, dass man beim Lesen irgendwie nie zur Ruhe kommt, dass zu viel passiert, aber nicht wirklich etwas vorangetrieben wird. Es ist eine seltsame Mischung aus Action und Stillstand. Das Ende passt schließlich so gar nicht zum Rest der Geschichte. Es ist gewöhnlich, kitschig und für mich auch in keiner Weise ein Cliffhänger. Ich habe kein Interesse daran, Aprils weiterer Selbstfindung zu folgen und werde es daher bei Band 1 belassen.
