ONE OF ZIBBY’S ULTIMATE SUMMER READING LIST BOOKS OF 2024

1975 is a time of change in America. The Vietnam War is ending. Muhammad Ali is fighting Joe Frazier. And in the small town of Monta Clare, Missouri, girls are disappearing.

When the daughter of a wealthy family is targeted, the most unlikely hero emerges—Patch, a local boy, who saves the girl, and, in doing so, leaves heartache in his wake.

Patch and those who love him soon discover that the line between triumph and tragedy has never been finer. And that their search for answers will lead them to truths that could mean losing one another.

A missing person mystery, a serial killer thriller, a love story, a unique twist on each, Chris Whitaker has written a novel about what lurks in the shadows of obsession and the blinding light of hope.

"At ten years old he realized that people were born whole, and that the bad things peeled layers from the person you once were, thinning compassion and empathy and the ability to construct a future. At thirteen he knew those layers could sometimes be rebuilt when people loved you. When you loved." A literary saga spanning multiple genres and decades. It's not just the story of a tragedy but also of what happens after, about obsession and several love stories, not all of them romantic. What ultimately makes this book so powerful is the strength of the characters, the humor that offers a relief through all the dark themes and the many surprising twists. And it's the kind of twists that I like: thoughtful, layered discoveries. Finding out what happened in this book is a gradual peeling away of layers. It follows these complex characters through their lives as they chase answers to a mystery that gets colder by the day, but alongside this are many powerful stories of love, friendship and loyalty. I cared so very much about every single character! The only critique I have is that this book consists of 261 chapters, some of them barely a couple pages long. This makes the pacing of the story quite eratic. It starts out fast, almost rushed slows a lot in the middle and picks up speed again at the end. I would have liked a more consistent tempo.
