Having read last year's Christmas-themed book by the author ( If Only In My Dreams), I was especially looking forward to A Wonderful Lie and some Christmassy vibes. And even though Lark isn't too big of a fan of the holiday season, she is a sympathetic character from the start. I love her snarky comments and honesty about not enjoying decorations and having to tailor her podcast topics to the season at all. Lark and Collin's banter is entertaining to read. They're long-time nemeses, constantly competing against one another and seemingly opposites in every way. After going to the same university, they were signed on by the same podcast company, crossing paths in the office now and then. They're not fond of each other. While you'd think they don't have much in common, they have similarly-themed podcasts that positively talk about dating and sex. Their social upbringings shaped them into becoming these 'sunshine' and 'grumpy' personas. Collin grew up surrounded by love, support, and acceptance, while Lark's extended family didn't offer any emotional support to her. That's also the reason for lacking meaningful human connections. I can't think of many grumpy x sunshine books I've read where the female protagonist is not this bubbly, happy persona, so I enjoyed this change. Lark and Collin love their careers and, at one point, find themselves in an enemies-with-benefits relationship while competing for the top spot at work. Soon they're trading uncharted waters with their relationship, having to process feelings they don't know how to handle. Aarons wrote some wonderful emotional passages that make it even easier to connect to the characters in a way. Of course, there's also plenty and the perfect amount of spice thrown into the mix. I especially enjoyed the humorous aspects alongside the more honest and raw moments - it's a well-balanced read that catches your attention on different levels. Because it's not the typical cheesy holiday romance but a book set around the festive season with enough emotional depth, it makes it even more enjoyable. Aarons created a fun set of characters, minor characters included, who were the reason for some laughs just as for some heartfelt moments. A Wonderful Lie deserves 4,5 stars and a massive recommendation for everyone who enjoys Christmassy books. This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
