Eva is tremendously happy. She is married to Jackson, the love of her life and they are just visiting her mother at a small coastal town in England. Jackson, who loves to fish, heads out to the sea early in the morning and leaves Eva behind in their bed. But the sea is very rough and the waves are hard and wild. A couple witnesses how he slips and falls into the water. Due to the cold temperature of the water and the rough weather odds of him surviving are bad. Eva is devastated. They have just begun their life together; they were still at the very beginning of their marriage and now he's gone. Eva feels lonely, longing for someone who loved and knew Jackson just as much as she did. So she decides to travel to Australia to visit Jackson's family to see the place his husband grew up and spent most of his life; hoping to feel closer to him again. A Single Breath is an absolutely addictive and exciting read. I could not put the book down I just had to find out what would happens next. Apart from a great storyline this book also contains impressive, special, interesting and great characters. There is Dirk for example, Jackson's father. He is an alcoholic and still suffering from the loss of his beloved wife many years ago. Under his hard shell he as a soft core and in the end everything he does is because he always wants to protect the people he loves, his family. Besides Dirk there is also Saul, Jacksons brother. Even though at the beginning of the book Saul is portrayed as the "bad brother", accused as a liar and someone you should always be aware of, throughout the story it turns out that Saul isn't the bad guy. I fell for him the first time he appeared in the book. He's amazing. And then there is Eva, our main protagonist. Eva is a strong and confident woman who already sufferend several strokes of fate. I felt so sorry for her because there were always new even worse things that kept happening to her but at the end there was always Saul to catch her and help her to keep her head up high. At first I thought the connection between Saul and Eva was kind of strange. After all, he is Jackson's brother, no matter what has happened, but the more time they spend together the clearer it becomes how deep the connection between them really is. Lucy Clarke describes their relationship in such a wonderful and heartbreaking way I just couldn't get enough of it. The story itself is also really great. Bad and weird things keep happening, things you do not expect. Secrets come to light, which changes Evas whole view of Jackson and her marriage to him. The book has a huge entertainment factor and is compelling up to the last page. All of this not only because of the great story, but also because of the stunning setting which Lucy Clarke chose to set her story in. She describes this place as an absolute paradise and more than once I caught myself wishing to be in Australia, in Tasmania, go freediving or for a walk on the beach just like Eva. This book simply contains everything a perfect summer read neads: a wonderful location, tension, mystery, romance ... I could hardly put it down. I buddy read the book with my mother and she was just as excited about the book as I was. Lucy Clarke is an incredibly talented writer and I'm really looking forward to reading more of her books.
