Magical Mystery

Not quite sure about the rating. Might rate it down a bit if I like the other two books way more. It was a good book, I loved the magic system and the characters, but there was something missing for me to really love it. Maybe it also wasn't the right time for it. The vibe was more on the calm (?) side. It's a slower story with much time spent at houses researching things (not a bad thing though). But let's start with the story. This takes place in a historical setting with a secret magic society. Robin Blyth isn't one of them, but accidentally gets a job that has to do with magic. His predecessor Reggie vanished, and somebody needed to fill the space. He soon realizes that something is wrong when he gets jumped by magicians that put a curse on him. Edwin Coursey who worked with his predecessor, is trying to help him, and together, they want to find out what happened to Reggie and why Robin was cursed. Everything has to do with a mysterious contract... Learning about the magic society alongside Robin was really interesting. I love how the magic system works (with the cradle). Their slowly developing relationship was also great. Edwin was my favorite character. I can totally relate to his love of books 😂 I just thought it could have been a bit more exciting in the grand scheme of things and am a bit uncertain about the progression of the story since the next book in the trilogy will be about another couple (involving Robin's sister Maud), which I generally don't mind, but I feel like this is their story and I also just want to see more of them as a couple 🥹 It just doesn't feel like the time to lay this plot in other hands, but let's see how I feel about it once I read the other books.
