Absolutely gruesom, but it pulls you in, slowly, and you can't escape.
I'm not a crime reader at all. On the contrary, I tend to avoid these books. But this one was a present and part of a reading challenge and - oh boy - this one was a surprise! It took me a while to get into it. There's lots of character introductions at first and the case only properly starts after 80 to 100 pages. English is my second language and George's writing style isn't the easiest, but damn, it's amazing. She has a way with describing scenes and characters that's so creepily realistic that I could practically smell the stench and feel the stickiness underneath my fingers. The case was intriguing and sometimes hard to follow. I knew the solution would be horrible (warning sexual violence against children), but in the end it was so much worse than anything I could have made up. It was utterly gruesom and horrifying and so well written. I bought the second book of the series right away! I wanted more of that writing!
