An instant New York Times bestseller! An Indie Next Top 10 Pick A Parents’ Choice Silver Honor Winner “A funny, action-packed, and sweet romance.” —School Library Journal (starred review) “A phenomenal read.” —RT Book Reviews A skilled painter must stand up to the ancient power of the faerie courts—even as she falls in love with a faerie prince—in this gorgeous bestseller that’s “an ideal pick for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Isobel is an artistic prodigy with a dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot bake bread or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobel’s paintings are highly prized. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—she makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes—a weakness that could cost him his life. Furious, Rook spirits her away to his kingdom to stand trial for her crime. But something is seriously wrong in his world, and they are attacked from every side. With Isobel and Rook depending on each other for survival, their alliance blossoms into trust, then love—and that love violates the fair folks’ ruthless laws. Now both of their lives are forfeit, unless Isobel can use her skill as an artist to fight the fairy courts. Because secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all the millennia of their unchanging lives: for the first time, her portraits have the power to make them feel.

Very nice, short read but nothing extraordinary

"Besides, what on earth would I do with men's hearts? I couldn't make an omelette out of them." This book was a good, quick read that I did enjoy. I liked the sometimes gruesome descriptions and all of the little enchantment-ideas which were very imaginative! Overall, it wasn't an entirely special story though, the plot itself was rather short and I am left with a couple of open questions regarding Hemlock.

It was a pleasant reading experience, but it didn't sweep me off my feet. It definitely does not compare to ACOTAR as many reviews said. The setting of this story was great. A likable, artist fmc that craves a life outside the endless summer and her routine. And the mmc whose life is full of intrigue and politics and love is seen as a weakness. But the world building was feeble. A lot of subjects in the book like the Good Law, the Wild Hunt, the World Beyond were scarcely touched on. The story is whimsical and there was beauty in it. The author clearly has great imagination and creativity, but because of all the missing details I couldn't immerse myself in this world. That being said it was the authors debut novel and I'm sure her next books will showcase her talent and creativity a lot more.

margaret rogerson has a new number one fangirl!

easy, yet beautiful writing. the cutest characters with the funniest quirks. a love story, that might be happening a bit too fast.... but at least rook seems to be a genuinely nice guy, which is really more than one can ask for these days.

~ 3.5 stars ~ I don’t really know why but there was just something about this book which didn’t fully convince me. I liked reading it but it isn’t like I absolutely fell in love with it.

Naja. Ich hatte Schwierigkeiten mich einzufinden. Ich denke es hatte aber viel mit der ich-Perspektive zu tun, das gefällt mir einfach nicht so gut. Die Story an sich war nett, aber mir viel zu oberflächlich.

second read - 5 stars I just adore this book! The characters? Immaculate. The story-telling? Stunning. The pace? Impeccable. This is truly the best book to read during autumn! I just wish there was MORE. More of the characters I fell in love with. More of this super intriguing world. More of the "what happens after". I truly hope the author decides to continue this story sometime, because I would DEVOUR that book!! first read - 4 stars I have one single complaint with this book: IT WAS FAR TOO SHORT! Because it was so short I had the feeling that some things also kept short. This book could've easily been a 400-page book, and I would not have grown tired of the author's vivid descriptions and the really interesting characters. I sincerely hope that we get to see more of these characters and this world in a future novel. Although the story of Isobel and Rook seems to have been concluded, there are still some questions left open that could potentially fill a book with a collection of short stories? The world building was by far my favorite part of this books. The places Isobel went to were so well described, I could almost feel the autumn leaves rustling around me while we were walking across the Fae lands. The author really showed a lot of potential in this debut novel, and oh dear did she show that she is good at writing! Another reason why the world building was so interesting to me was the description of the fae - human relationship in the book. Their descriptions were so lively and interesting. Especially the fact that humans were the only ones to craft things struck me as surprising. Usually, fae creatures are portrayed as being utterly perfect; in this story, however, we saw that they are utterly flawed, and it's the fae who envy the humans, and not the other way around. I loved that! The characters were described in such a vivid fashion that I almost thought they were real characters, living just outside my window. They were all so unique, one had a completely different voice than the other, which was amazing. I definitely hope that this isn't the last we've seen from this author or the world she created. I would love to read more about these characters!

What a strange read. Strange but good at the same time. It reminded me of Beauty and the Beast just the other way around.

Wonderful read. It was written a little too shallow for my taste, but I loved it anyway. I liked Rooks and Isobels character very much.
