With "The Crowns of Croswald" from the author D.E. Night we get transported into a magical realm. A land that is full of magic, magical creatures, and royals. Over the land reigns the Dark Queen, who is feared by her people. We follow the life of Ivy a scaldrony maid. She is responsible for the dragons who cook the food. I loved that idea and is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to magical creatures in this book. The main reason why I picked this book up was that it has a magical boarding school. And ever since Harry Potter I have to read everything that contains that. Because I love to read about all the magical lessons and life with magic. Some parts reminded me slightly of Harry Potter but otherwise, it has had its own charm and magic. Ivy was a lovely character who I envied for her bravery to explore places she knows that was forbidden. More than once she got in trouble for that. I don't want to tell you more about the story because you have to explore the world on your own. Not just the story was magnificent but also the little drawings at each chapter beginning. In all, I can highly recommend this debut novel which enchanted me. Also, I started the second book just after finishing the first one, cause it's so good.
At first, I had no idea what to expect from the story and everything was still a bit unclear. Some used were unfamiliar to me (not my native language), but fortunately I got used to that quickly. It's so much more imaginative than most fantasies these days, on a completely different level of fantasy. The story is lighter and more colorful for a reason or another. It reminds me very much of Harry Potter, but in an original way. It doesn't feel like a copy, it really has its own style. It also reminds me of A Winter's Promise, by the amount of fantasy and crazy events, but also a bit of the way it is written. After the prologue and the first two chapters, the story starts to catch on and reads away very nicely. The Characters Ivy is so much fun! In the beginning, she really has to crawl out of her shell: everything is new to her, because all of a sudden she can become a Scrivenist, when she was actually a maid who was expelled from the castle. Soon there appears to be more behind Ivy. It's also nice that Ivy doesn't immediately excel in everything, but is just normal, even a bit of a grey mouse, but not in an irritating way. Miraculous things happen around Ivy that cannot be explained. This really arouses curiosity: what is her history, where does she come from, what are her powers? Rebecca is introduced further on and is also such a nice character, a cozy and cheerful girl! It's nice that Ivy makes a good friend who is not inferior to the main character. She also is a very sweet character, but stands up for herself and it's nice how she supports Ivy at all times. Rebecca also has a special power that will come in handy later on! Another character is Fyn, a third-class boy who shows up everywhere Ivy goes. The further the story goes, the better friends they become. He could have had a little more depth in my opinion, but who knows that might come in part 2! Finally, there are the teachers who are written in nicely and further on in the story, I won't reveal anything yet, some mysterious characters pop up too. And there's a very annoying child in the book, haha, but of course that's part of it! The Vibes I looove the vibe of this book, the castle, how everything is written. It is so vivid and imaginative - you really invisionise everything and that works so well because the focus of a Scrivenist is also on sketching, memorising everything, art and magic. You really feel that throughout the whole book. Oh and the drawings at the beginning of each chapter are such a nice addition! I am really happy with this story. Everything is super magical and you imagine yourself in the world of magic potions, sumptuous decorations, beautiful rooms and piles of books. Who wouldn't want that? The Story The story is very nicely written. You get to know a little bit more everytime as Ivy discovers more about her past. I didn't think it was really a predictable book, it was actually full of surprises! You know that Ivy is probably special, that there is more going on, but I think the way this is all put together is very well done. I really enjoyed this story and I'm really looking forward to reading the next parts! Conclusion I really loved the book overal! It has so much fantasy in it, it was really a joy to my mind!
