Beschreibung

From the acclaimed author of New York 2140 and Red Mars, this NYT bestselling novel tells the story of a future where humanity has populated miraculous new habitats engineered across the solar system -- and the one death that triggers a precarious chain of events that could destroy it all.

The year is 2312. Scientific and technological advances have opened gateways to an extraordinary future. Earth is no longer humanity's only home; new habitats have been created throughout the solar system on moons, planets, and in between. But in this year, 2312, a sequence of events will force humanity to confront its past, its present, and its future.

The first event takes place on Mercury, on the city of Terminator, itself a miracle of engineering on an unprecedented scale. It is an unexpected death, but one that might have been foreseen. For Swan Er Hong, it is an event that will change her life. Swan was once a woman who designed worlds. Now she will be led into a plot to destroy them.

This is a strange book. I do have to say, I liked to read about the ideas and visions the author has in mind about the future and that's the main and probably only reason why I kept reading it, because the world and its social developments ARE interesting! BUT... where's the story? For a book that is almost 600 pages thick, the plot is way too simple and evolves too slowly! Also, the intentions and motivations of the people are told and understandable, but always kinda seem dull. Reading a book, I don't just wanna be told that they do something as a reaction to something else that happened in the past! I want to be grabbed by my emotions and get the feeling that the person is absolutely right to do so! Another thing that kinda bothered me is, that the protagonist doesn't seem to actually know what's going on, not even 400 pages into the book! It's great to have plot twists that completely change the idea the main character had before of what's going on. Here that effect is missing since he/she seems to merely be a dull courier. So after all... mixed feelings. Great world-building and setting, not so great story and characters. PS: Stopped reading after about 400 pages
