Shortlisted for the 2019 Booker Prize Named a Best Book of the Year by Bookpage, NPR, Washington Post, and The Economist A moving novel on the power of friendship in our darkest times, from internationally renowned writer and speaker Elif Shafak. In the pulsating moments after she has been murdered and left in a dumpster outside Istanbul, Tequila Leila enters a state of heightened awareness. Her heart has stopped beating but her brain is still active-for 10 minutes 38 seconds. While the Turkish sun rises and her friends sleep soundly nearby, she remembers her life-and the lives of others, outcasts like her. Tequila Leila's memories bring us back to her childhood in the provinces, a highly oppressive milieu with religion and traditions, shaped by a polygamous family with two mothers and an increasingly authoritarian father. Escaping to Istanbul, Leila makes her way into the sordid industry of sex trafficking, finding a home in the city's historic Street of Brothels. This is a dark, violent world, but Leila is tough and open to beauty, light, and the essential bonds of friendship. In Tequila Leila's death, the secrets and wonders of modern Istanbul come to life, painted vividly by the captivating tales of how Leila came to know and be loved by her friends. As her epic journey to the afterlife comes to an end, it is her chosen family who brings her story to a buoyant and breathtaking conclusion.

The first book by Elif Shafak that I read and I was instantly captivated by her storytelling. The perspective of the main character is very unique, all characters are drawn with precision. A book that I kept thinking about for a long time after I had finished it.

So, I read this book a month back and gosh I loved it. I think ‘love’ wouldn’t suffice to what I felt about this book/ story. I remember I had read only 4 chapters and I was talking to one of my friends about how awesome this book is and I had chills, literal chills while I spoke about it. Even though they're so much to discuss…. I don’t know how to praise it. You know; When you have so much to say — and you don’t know where to begin? Maybe I should just mull around and my brain will type something good, something that justifies how good this book is. “Two minutes after her heart had stopped beating, Leila’s mind recalled two contrasting tastes: lemon and sugar”. Ah, my heart. The book with facts and fiction, never could I have ever imagined loving a book like this as much. The beauty of the story how things that we overlook, maybe even find fault in ourselves… she puts it and leaves the truth there. Ah, it’s one of those stories you just cannot forget. However, the second half of the book, according to me is not that powerful, felt like it dragged but the way the book ended gave me reassurance that if in the world I have even one person really cares about me, it will be a worthy life. READ IT IF YOU HAVEN’T.

So viel Kultur, Geschichte, Religiöses.

I would have rated the book five stars, if it would have ended with the end of thw 10 mimutes and 38 seconds. Everything afterwards was just too much. Sadly I've come out of the book and overall it was just okay for me. Please remember reading is subjective.
